On September 12, 2024, a significant milestone in Sri Lankan healthcare was achieved with the laying of the foundation stone for the  National Heart Center at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) in Colombo. Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Secretary of Health, led the ceremony, marking a major step forward in advanced cardiac care. The center will feature cutting-edge catheterization labs, hybrid cardiac operation theaters, several ICUs, and HDUs.

The event saw the participation of the Association of Cardiothoracic and Thoracic Surgeons of Sri Lanka (ACTSSL), along with veteran cardiologists from across the country. Once completed, the facility aims to revolutionize cardiovascular treatment, offering world-class services to patients and significantly reducing the need for overseas treatment.

This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s healthcare system, ensuring access to top-tier cardiac care for all Sri Lankans.
