Workshop on Surgical Instrument Identification and Handling for CTOT Nurses Announced

Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Association of Cardiothoracic and Thoracic Surgeons of Sri Lanka (ACTSSL), in collaboration with the Aesculap Academy, the education arm of B. Braun Group, has organized a one-day workshop on surgical instrument handling and maintenance for nurses in cardiothoracic units.

Scheduled for January 19, 2025, at the Neurotrauma Auditorium, National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), Colombo, the workshop aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of nurses, enabling them to efficiently manage fine surgical instruments while ensuring patient safety.

Key Highlights of the Workshop:

  • Efficient Instrument Management: Practical insights on preserving surgical resources while ensuring safety.
  • Cost-Effective Maintenance: Strategies for maintaining instruments with a focus on the role of the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
  • Sustainability Focus: Discussion on surgical instrument repair and health economics related to sterile packaging.
  • Hands-On Training: Practical sessions on cleaning, handling, quality assessment, and storage of surgical instruments.
  • Special Topics: Identifying ideal suture materials and maintaining power systems such as sternum saws.

Participants will have access to resourceful faculty members and real-world case studies, providing an unparalleled learning opportunity. The workshop also covers the safe handling of surgical staplers and offers a comprehensive approach to ensuring the longevity and functionality of theater instruments.
