The Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at the National Hospital of Kandy, Sri Lanka, was established in 2007 by Dr. Mahendra Munasinghe and has since become a leading center for cardiothoracic surgery. With a team of four dedicated surgeons supported by expert cardiothoracic anesthetists and nursing staff, the unit offers comprehensive care in adult cardiac surgery.

The unit's facilities include a clinic, preoperative wards, two modern operating theaters, an intensive care unit, high dependency unit, and postoperative ward. Performing an average of 550 to 600 cases annually, the unit specializes in coronary artery revascularization, offering both on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) as well as valve surgeries, including aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve procedures.

In addition to elective surgeries, the unit handles emergency cases such as emergency coronary revascularization, valve surgery (especially for endocarditis), and surgery for aortic dissection. They also provide emergency coverage for cath labs at various hospitals.

While primarily focused on adult cardiac surgery, the unit also undertakes selected pediatric surgeries like atrial septal defect closure and ventricular septal closure, as well as urgent thoracic surgeries including trauma surgery and surgeries for infections like empyema.

Committed to compassionate care and excellent outcomes, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at the National Hospital of Kandy remains dedicated to serving its patients with the highest standards of care and expertise.
